The Problem with Conspiracy Theories

(2 Timothy 2:23-26 – The Problem with Conspiracy Theories)

In this day and age it seems there is always some new conspiracy theory floating about. It seems for every event that happens, somebody comes up with the idea that it is a conspiracy of some sort.

The problem with conspiracy theories

I am reminded of some that I have heard in recent times like, the rollout of the 5G cellular phone network spread COVID. Or that taking a COVID shot would dumb down a person or implant the mark of the beast. And again, that COVID was deliberately let loose to kill off the older generation. And let’s not forget that supposedly Bill Gates is behind all of this!

These are all stupid, pointless, and senseless controversies. In this scripture today we see Paul warning Timothy (and us) about the problem with conspiracy theories or controversies.

Why do conspiracy theories start?

There can be many reasons why conspiracy theories start. Some are fuelled by paranoia as some segments of society trust no-one. And that is another reason why they start too, a lack of trust. Some occur as the result of an illogical cause and effect. The 5G rollout causing COVID is a classic example of that one.

To give a foolish example of this illogical cause and effect route to conspiracy, a classic is the one where shark attacks increase when ice cream sales increase. Some say there is a definite cause and effect. But it is a stupid position to hold because the real cause is the onset of summer that causes both to rise. In summer more ice cream is sold, and in summer more people go to the beach where sharks lurk and might attack.

Controversies and conspiracy theories are by nature stupid. They are a senseless waste of time and they lead people to think wrongly, to be filled with fear, to come to wrong conclusions, and to falsely accuse people of things that they neither did nor had any control over.

This is the problem with conspiracy theories.

What is the real root cause of the problem with conspiracy theories?

We get an idea of the problem with conspiracy theories and what the real root cause of them is in this scripture today.

23 Have nothing to do with stupid, senseless controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. 24 And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kindly to every one, an apt teacher, forbearing, 25 correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant that they will repent and come to know the truth, 26 and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:23-26)

In the last verse of this section of scripture we find the true culprit behind conspiracy theories.

The devil is the one developing and spreading controversies and conspiracy theories. He wants to have people focused on lies and spreading these things to others.

If you recall above where I showed that the effect of conspiracy theories is fear, illogical thinking, mistrust, false accusations, and so on, it is then very clear to see the hand of the devil in these things. As Jesus said in John 8:44, the devil, “…is a liar and the father of lies.” It is the devil who is the real root cause of the problem with conspiracy theories.

How do we overcome the problem with conspiracy theories?

When we can identify the root cause, then the solution becomes evident. So if the devil is the root cause, then the solution is Jesus.

As Paul points out, the best thing to do to overcome the problem with conspiracy theories is to have nothing to do with them. If someone comes to you talking conspiracies, just walk away. Do not become involve with the theories and even more, do not quarrel over them.

And that is one of the issues with such false theories. They lead to quarrels, arguments, and fights.

As an example, think of all the arguments and fights over that greatest of all conspiracy theories: the theory of evolution. That theory is founded on lies, a lack of coherent thought, and false thinking. It has never been proved because it cannot be proved. Even a blind fool can see glaring discrepancies and fallacies with the theory.

And despite it being taught in schools as fact, it is still a theory until proved.

Consider just this one simple problem with that theory that completely shatters it as foolishness. One of the key premises of the theory is that all life evolved from one species to the next. Thus, if it were true there should be and intervening subspecies between all species that has the characteristics of both. This is the so-called “missing link.” Without that appropriately named “missing link” the whole theory falls apart and topples like a house of cards. And in truth there should be so many missing links between all “evolved species” that archaeologists are literally tripping over them. The archaeological record should be so full of missing links, given how many unique species of life exist, that scientists should be falling over them in literally every dig they do.

But how many have they found? None. Because they don’t exist and the theory, this great controversy and conspiracy of the devil is a lie.

As Paul said, have nothing to do with them. Don’t get into arguments about them either for as servants of the Lord, your role and mine is to not be quarrelsome and argumentative. Perhaps if they are truly seeking the Lord will open their eyes to the truth and they will find the way to Him.

So, this is the problem with conspiracy theories. They promote speculation, arguments, and the like and they turn people away from finding and following the truth. Have nothing to do with them and keep your eyes focused on Jesus, which is where the truth of all things will be found.
