(Titus 2:11-15 – Saved by the Grace of God)
We do not know really how blessed we are. The offer to every person on the earth is the same. We are offered the opportunity to be saved by the grace of God.
Every person on earth that is here or has been in the past is under the power of sin. We are all sinners that have fallen short of the glory of God.
But God in His great love and mercy has given us all hope to be saved by the grace of God. Nothing we can do can achieve this. It is only by the grace of God that we can and will be saved.
Saved by the Grace of God
The power of God’s grace is immeasurable. His grace extends to every person on earth, if they seek Him. His love is endless and bottomless for those who seek Him and love His ways.
But some may wonder, just what is the grace of God?
I have heard many explanations over the years, but the best one I believe is this.
God’s grace is the undeserved favour and kindness that God has for those who seek Him.
His grace is undeserved because you cannot do anything to receive it. You only need to believe in God and His Son to receive the grace of God. There is nothing any person can do to gain God’s grace or favour. It is based only upon faith. Specifically, faith in what God has achieved in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The scripture puts it this way.
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God– 9 not because of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
So, no Christian can or should boast because His grace is a gift. Grace and the salvation of our lives is given freely by God. It cannot be bought, it cannot be earned, and it is not anyone’s due or right. It is the free gift from God and every Christian stands in the same place before Him. We are saved by the grace of God, through faith alone.
The Power of the Grace of God
Stop and consider your salvation for a moment. In Jesus Christ you have been saved from sin. All of your past sins are not being counted against you. In fact God says that when we come to Him through Jesus Christ, He forgets all of our sins.
Furthermore, God overlooks any mistakes we make going forward. He does not hold any sin against His people. Past, present or future sins are all gone.
In addition, we have a reward that is beyond human comprehension. He has promised us eternal life with Him and Jesus Christ. Eternity with no death, sickness, evil people, problems of the world, oppression, and so on. All of that will be wiped away and in fact this earth will be rolled up like an old rag. When we get to the place of eternal life, God will create a new heaven and a new earth that will not be subject to decay. The new earth will not wear away, just as the people at that time will not die.
Pretty amazing, isn’t it? And that is just the start.
But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him,” (1 Corinthians 2:9)
But what do we need to do? We can’t work for this grace and can’t earn it, but surely there are things we need to do?
What we need to do when we are saved by the Grace of God
This brings us to the scripture under review today. We are given some good advice of what we are to do, as well as what God’s grace does for us.
11 For the grace of God has appeared for the salvation of all men, 12 training us to renounce irreligion and worldly passions, and to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world, 13 awaiting our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, 14 who gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds. 15 Declare these things; exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no one disregard you. (Titus 2:11-15)
Here we have some further insight into the grace of God. In the first verse all mankind are offered the opportunity for salvation.
Verse 12 begins to show us what we need to do having received the free gift of God’s grace. This is interesting because the first few words give us a good overview of the power of Jesus Christ and the working of the New Covenant.
We are told to renounce irreligion, that is, ungodliness. We need to turn away from all things ungodly. As an example, all of the things that are lauded by the world are meaningless to God because they are ungodly.
As the verse continues we are instructed to renounce worldly passions. These are the lusts and desires of humanity.
This is a tough ask because passions, lusts and desires are part of the human condition. However, God in His mercy and through His grace has given us the power to do this thing. It is passion that drives people to sinfulness. So, if we are to renounce sin, the best place to attack is at the very root cause of sin. And God gives us the Holy Spirit to teach us how to overcome passions.
As we continue reading the verse above we are exhorted to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world. This is not easy because the world will be against you simply because you stand in opposition to their ungodliness.
Finally, if we are saved by the grace of God we need to be zealous for what is good. We do not take any part in the works of darkness, but should always seek to do good to all, even those who hate us.
You have been saved by the grace of God, and it is an amazing thing. Nothing can compare to what we have been offered in the grace of God. The suffering of this time is nothing compared to the blessings we receive both now and will receive in the future. Eternity is on offer to those who want it. Just seek God through Jesus Christ and let Him lead you into His kingdom and be saved by the grace of God.
