Pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth

(1 Timothy 2:1-4 – Pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth)

If ever there was a time to pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth it is right now. A knowledge of the truth is the only thing that will allow people to get through the difficult times ahead.

But sadly, not all men will come to a knowledge of the truth. Indeed most will not and will be lost to the lies that have descended upon this world.

Even amongst Christians there will be those who fail to come to a knowledge of the truth and will fall away. The devil is in his last throes and will seek to destroy as many as he can before the coming of the Lord. So we need to pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth in the hope that the Lord will show mercy on some and call them to His ways.

A knowledge of the truth

One of the phrases I keep hearing in recent times is, “This is MY truth!” People seem to think that they can justify their actions and behaviours because that is THEIR truth.

I heard this recently heard this phrase used on a reality TV show where one of the teams had been caught out cheating. However, the person who was cheating refused to admit they were doing so, but their defense was, “This is my truth!”

But it just doesn’t work. It was a lie, and no matter how you cut it, a lie is a lie.

There is and can only be one truth, not many truths as this phrase seems to suggest. There is just ONE truth.

The one truth that really matters is the truth as defined by Jesus Christ. Any other so-called “truth” is not the truth but is a lie.

The most important truth of all is the knowledge of the truth of Jesus Christ. That truth is the one that leads to salvation and eternal life, as well as a better standard of life now.

To gain a knowledge of the truth requires effort. You can’t just accept blindly what other people say as it may turn out to be the blind leading the blind. But when you put in the effort to learn the truth for yourself, through prayer and study of the Bible, then Jesus will open the truth to you.

As we see from this scripture under review today in the last verse, the value of a knowledge of the truth is that it does lead to salvation.

1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respectful in every way. 3 This is good, and it is acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

It is not God’s will that anyone should be lost. His will is the salvation of all, but that depends on us looking for the truth and seeking out the Lord.

Pray for all men

Pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth so that the Lord will open the word to as many as possible.

It is especially important to pray for all men who are in power and in government. Our hope is to live a peaceful life, able to praise and worship the Lord without restriction.

Unfortunately, that is becoming harder in the current world, and it will get worse.

Christians have been identified as the most persecuted people in the world. Even in western countries that are supposed to be Christian, they are becoming more and more persecuted.

Here in Victoria, Australia where I live, it has been recognised that our state government is one of the most anti-Christian in the western world and they are escalating their anti-Christian agenda. As an example of the anti-Christian approaches taken by this government, this link provides an insight into what the state premier and government have been doing,

But in spite of the anti-Christian stance of this government, we should pray for them. It is not the Lord’s will that ANY be lost, and that includes all of the anti-Christian people out there as well.

Consider the life of the Apostle Paul. He was in his time the most anti-Christian person ever. He actively sought out Christians to have them beaten and imprisoned, and he stood in agreement with the stoning of Stephen, generally considered by many as the first Christian martyr.

So, if Paul could be turned around by Christ, so can our anti-Christian governments and opposition everywhere.

And conversely, if they are to be judged for damnation, then that is not our business or responsibility. Judgement belongs with the Lord. God is the judge and we do not know who He is working with to hopefully become the next “Paul.”

Pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth

Which brings me back to the point of this scripture and this article. We need to pray for ALL men to come to a knowledge of the truth. And we need to pray in a spirit of love, just as Jesus loves us.

Prayer is powerful. Intercessory prayer for governments and people is powerful. The Lord hears our prayers and acts.

He may turn their heart around, or He may simply remove the burden of their oppression from us. Whatever He does, we need to pray for all men and ask for His intervention for the good of all, and hopefully that they will come to a knowledge of the truth.

The time is short and the Lord is on His way back to save His people. So be constant in prayer and keep you eyes, mind, and heart set on the things of the Lord.

There will be many distractions as we are seeing right now that are not of the truth. The distractions of COVID-19 and the constant stream of media reporting on it becomes mind-numbing after a while. Add to this the myriad of lies, controversies, conspiracy theories, and dissensions it has and is bringing about and the distractions keep on piling up.

None of those things will lead to a knowledge of the truth. They are deliberate distractions of the devil to take people away from the truth.

And that is why we must pray for all men to come to a knowledge of the truth so that the REAL truth will come out. The ONLY true truth that is in following Jesus Christ.
