How to focus on the True knowledge of God

(1 Timothy 6:20-21 – How to focus on the True knowledge of God)

There are a lot of things spoken about in the world today that are supposedly knowledge. But most of what is said is just information or data.

Then there are the things that promote controversy and speculation. These things are not good knowledge either as they lead people down rabbit holes.

Even in the church there is a great deal of information and doctrine that cannot be called knowledge. So it is vital for all of us, especially Christians, to learn how to focus on the true knowledge of God. That way, we will never be led astray into false teachings and false doctrines that have no place in Christianity.

Lies, controversy and conspiracy theories

It seems that for every situation that takes place these days, someone manages to develop a conspiracy theory. Just look at what was being said with respect to COVID.

At one point it was suggested that COVID was caused or spread by the 5G phone network. It was said also that the vaccines were deadly and they were killing more people than the disease. Someone suggested that the vaccines were injecting nanobots to change the DNA of people. Others thought that the vaccines were injecting the mark of the beast from Revelation. And on top of it all, some believed that Bill Gates was the Antichrist who was causing all of this to happen!

These are just the things that come to the top of my mind, and they are all rubbish. It is all lies, controversy and conspiracy designed to promote fear and mistrust.

And therein lies the problem. If we cease to trust by believing these lies, then we no longer have a firm foundation on which to stand to assess truth from error. We don’t know how to focus on the true knowledge of God.

The Christian dilemma and how to focus on the true knowledge of God

The scripture today is a warning. It is just as relevant today as it was when it was given. This is what the scripture has to say.

20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you. Avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 for by professing it some have missed the mark as regards the faith. Grace be with you. (1 Timothy 6:20-21)

The first thing we see in this warning is to guard the truth of what we know. You must guard the truth as if it were more precious than gold or silver because it is more precious. The truth of the covenant and gospel of Jesus Christ is the only thing that will lead to salvation and eternal life.

So, how do we guard the truth of what we learn to find out how to focus on the true knowledge of God?

The next part gives another clue. It says to avoid the godless chatter and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge.

All of those controversies and conspiracy theories are falsely called knowledge. But they are not. So, avoid them. Don’t even listen to that garbage as it doesn’t lead anywhere good. And besides, if you start sprouting those things, people will likely think you are a nut case.

Instead, seek the solid foundation of Christianity. And there is only one foundation: Jesus Christ Himself.

How to focus on the true knowledge of God in Christ Jesus

If you want to know how to focus on the true knowledge of God, start by focusing on Jesus. Read what He had to say and absorb His teachings. Go directly to the Lord in prayer and ask God to open the scriptures to you so that you can learn the fullness of the truth.

In fact, God the Father directed us where to look and who to listen to.

1 And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light. 3 And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Eli’jah, talking with him. 4 And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is well that we are here; if you wish, I will make three booths here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Eli’jah.” 5 He was still speaking, when lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” (Matthew 17:1-5)

The highlighted words come directly from God the Father. He spoke to the disciples instructing them to “Listen to Him,” that is, Jesus.

Jesus has all of the teachings of life that will lead us to eternal salvation. There is no one else and no other teachings that will do this. His teachings lead to love, joy, peace, transformation, victory over the flesh, freedom from sin, righteousness, and holiness.

This is why we need to listen to Him and not the noise that is in this world. Sadly, there is also a lot of “noise” from false doctrine in the church today as well. Many things are taught that do not come from the truth of the scripture and are false.

So, if you want to learn how to focus on the true knowledge of God, you need to listen to Jesus.

What is truth?

The essence of how to focus on the true knowledge of God is about finding the truth. But what is truth?

First and foremost, and following on from the last bit of information, Jesus is the truth. As the scripture tells us:

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but by me. (John 14:6)

Jesus is the truth. He is also the way by which we come to the Father and it is in Him that we find life.

So, if we want to know how to focus on the true knowledge of God, the best place to start is to focus on Jesus. Listen to His words and do what He tells us because He only speaks the truth. And look at what Jesus Himself said about His words and teachings.

Sanctify them in the truth;thy word is truth. (John 17:17)

These are the words of Jesus speaking about the Father. Jesus said that the words of the Father are truth. The words that are written in the Bible all emanate from the Father. He has ensured that we have a source of truth from which to learn.

And we validate and verify the truth when we pray and ask about it because the Lord through the Holy Spirit grants us the full understanding of His words.

Why the modern church does not know how to focus on the true knowledge of God

Sadly, many of the teachings of the modern church have nothing to do with the truth.

Why? Because they have not guarded the truth but have allowed false prophets and false teachers to beguile them with false teachings. This has been happening down through the centuries since Jesus last stood on the earth.

The modern church has not followed the instructions of God the Father to “Listen to Him,” that is, Jesus. Instead they listened to all manner of false doctrines, and still do today. They do what pleases them rather than what pleases God.

And the lies are perpetuated through the institutions the church has built. Many of the modern churches have their own Bible schools, colleges, or universities. In these they teach the doctrines of the church to prepare the next generation of ministers, priests, and pastors for the ministry.

But sadly, over the years and often centuries, false teachings have infiltrated the church and these are then part of the core curriculum of these schools. And if a student wants to be ordained to preach in those churches, they must accept these false teachings or leave the school. If a student happens to stumble upon the truth and it is at odds with the teachings of the church, they have no other option. It is either toe the church line, or leave.

It is because of all these types of things that the modern church does not know how to focus on the true knowledge of God. And because of the way the church is structured, it can never get any better.
