The first line of defense for a soldier is the shield. They hold this out in front of them as they advance and they stand behind it when the enemy attacks.
So too the shield of faith is the first line of defense for a Christian in the spiritual war against the devil. All of the spiritual attacks of the devil can be warded off and defended against when we hold fast our faith.
