Having the right attitude as a Christian

(1 Timothy 2:9-10 – Having the right attitude as a Christian)

This particular verse today considers how a woman ought to dress and behave if she is a Christian. It is worth considering because it tells us a lot.

But what I see in this is not an issue of clothing and so on, but rather the issue of attitude. Thus, the title for this post being, “Having the right attitude as a Christian.”

It is equally as important for men as it is for women too. This is not just something that a woman should do as a Christian, but also men should consider as well. After all, in Christ all are equal.

We are all equal in Christ Jesus

The first thing we have to remember is that in Christ we are all equal. No man is above a woman or a woman above a man in Christ Jesus.

As the scripture says:

26 for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise. (Galatians 3:26-29)

Gender is irrelevant when we belong to Christ for He sees us all as being the same. The same is the case for ethnicity and race. There is no distinction, no bias, no prejudice in Christ. In fact, if ever racial discrimination and the glass ceiling for women and all the rest of the issues in the world today based on gender, race, or anything else are to be fixed, they will be fixed by coming to Christ.

We are all equal in Christ and when we look at those around us we need to behave that way too.

Having the right attitude as a Christian

The scripture today says this:

9 also that women should adorn themselves modestly and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly attire 10 but by good deeds, as befits women who profess religion. (1 Timothy 2:9-10)

Paul writes here that women should not dress outrageously or bedeck themselves with jewellery and gold. But even more important in this scripture, he is saying that they should be “dressed” with good deeds as daughters of Christ.

The essence of Paul’s words are for the women to behave appropriately, having the right attitude as a Christian.

But should it be any different for men? Men today can be dressed like peacocks and there is the adage that they need to “dress to impress.”

Christian men should likewise behave in an appropriate manner and not try to flaunt themselves using the standards of the world.

It doesn’t matter whether you are female or male, having the right attitude as a Christian is far more important than what you wear.

Jesus warned about having the right attitude as a Christian

In several of His teachings, Jesus warned about such things. Think on this a moment.

27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but within you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. (Matthew 23:27-28)

Jesus was critical of those who look good but are not good, especially in the Church. Such people wear all kinds of glorious and rich garments to try and look pious and look good, but they teach all manner of wickedness. They are hypocrites and liars who are leading the people of God astray.

Jesus was more concerned about getting your heart condition right, as the following scripture shows.

25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the plate, but inside they are full of extortion and rapacity. 26 You blind Pharisee! first cleanse the inside of the cup and of the plate, that the outside also may be clean. (Matthew 23:25-26)

He was saying it is more important to get your heart right before worrying about the rest. Having the right attitude as a Christian is much more important than looking good.

So, we can learn these same lessons from these words today.

Whether you are male or female is of no consequence when considering the right attitude to have as a Christian. Even though Paul was addressing the dress requirements to the women, the state of the heart matter is relevant to all people.

In the end, it’s not about what we look like but who we are inside that will lead us to salvation, or destruction.
