(John 10:17-21)
There are some things in this world that are considered unstoppable and unchangeable. The rising and setting of the sun, the ebb and flow of the tides and of course those classics…death and taxes! But in truth all of these things are really only temporary and there will come a time when they will all end.
However Jesus was truly unstoppable and He will never end for He is eternal. He could not be held down by anything for His purpose was set and authorised by the Father and would be seen through to a conclusion regardless of what would come. The plan was set in place and is moving forward to a conclusion that is inevitable. The way I look at this is a bit like the song by Bob Dylan, Slow Train Coming. The plan of God is like a slow train moving down the track. Nothing you can do will stop it, it just keeps on rolling along.
And in the context of this section of scripture we see the unstoppable nature of Jesus. He came for a purpose and that purpose would and will be served.
Jesus is Unstoppable
This section of scripture tells us about the charge that Jesus was given by the Father. He was charged with the most important role anyone would play in the history of mankind.
17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again.18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
Jesus had the ability to lay down His life and die and then to re-take his life and be resurrected. He had the authority to do this and that authority came from the Father himself.
No other person who ever lived or will live in the future shall have that ability or authority. Others were raised from the dead by Jesus, the apostles and some of the prophets, but those people eventually succumbed to death again and went the way of all flesh.
However when Jesus was resurrected and took his life again He did not die again but went directly to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father. After His resurrection Jesus remained alive and did not die again, and He is still alive today. He truly is unstoppable!
Why He was Unstoppable
There are two aspects to Jesus being unstoppable. The first is because he was and is obedient to the Father. He came to do the will of the Father for it was the Father’s desire that Jesus be the perfect sacrifice for us. All of what He did both in his life on earth and His death and resurrection were for our benefit.
The second aspect of why He was unstoppable was so that we would have the opportunity to be returned to a place of perfection and in a oneness with God. Man fell from Gods grace through sin. But Jesus paid the price for our sins so that we could come back to a place where we could stand before God righteous by faith. And He also paved the way so that we could learn how to be righteous by how we live and be changed into the image of perfection, which is the image of Jesus Christ. That is why He needed to be unstoppable, to give us the chance of a lifetime.
Being Unstoppable
Now it is up to us to learn also how to be unstoppable. The offer has been made, the gift has been given and the path has been laid out before us. Jesus has set the wheels in motion and they cannot be turned back. It is up to us to take the next step and come to him to learn and grow in the spirit.
There are some who fear and worry that Christianity is in decline. The bible and the teachings of Jesus are being removed from public life, from schools, from courts and so on. But Christianity will never be lost or disappear for it is unstoppable just as Christ himself was.
We need not fear because The Lord will have His people in the right place at the right time. As he said in John 12:26, “If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.” The servant of The Lord will be where The Lord wants him when he wants him to be there. The opposition of the world will not be able to withstand against The Lord for He will be like that “Slow Train Coming” and will just continue on rolling and will roll over anything that gets in His way.
The path is set and the future has already been decided. Jesus is unstoppable and the will of God will be done.
