Why Choose God?

Christians today are often questioned about their beliefs. Some people ask how it is that people can believe in God and hope in Jesus Christ in this modern age. Many believe science will provide all of the answers to the questions of life, so why choose God, why believe God and why follow Jesus?

However there is one key element that prevents science from finding the truth about God. Science demands empirical proof that can be measured. But God is spiritual and cannot be measured like the things of the natural world. God can only be found by faith. Even so, there are keys by which we can see and understand the impact of God and conversely what would be the case if there were no God.

The following are a few key reasons for choosing God that are valid and validated in this modern age.

Order

The universe as we know it is orderly. There are fundamental laws, rules and principles that control it. They are seen in physics, medicine and the natural sciences showing evidence of a higher intelligence that has set these things in place. The alternative is disorder and chaos. If there were no God, then how would the universe remain stable? But it is the precision of the creation, the structure and control of the universe that speaks abundantly of the work of God.

Balance

The environmental, ecological, physiological and other systems of the world are in perfect equilibrium. They may shift and are dynamic but they always come back into balance. Whenever something goes awry, there is always a rectifying process that returns balance. This too is evidence of the hand of God in the design of this world as the alternative would be death and destruction.

Meaning

There is no valid answer to the question of why we are here if there is no God. We are here to look for God and find him, and in finding and serving him he will reward us. If there is no God then what is the point to life? Existence would be superficial and based on mere chance with nothing to live for beyond what we see.

Hope

Without God there is no hope. In God there is the hope of a better life now and the promise of a future. In this life we are bound by death, but in God we have the hope of release from that bondage. It is only when hope abounds that we move forward. Without hope, why do anything? Why bother? But when we hope in God we see a better future.

Security

In God we know where we stand and we find strength. God protects his people who look to him, whether in health, safety, danger or any other way. The Lord has said, “I will never fail you nor forsake you,” and, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid; what can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6) When we have these promises and see them at work, we become strong and fearless, even in the face of death.

Peace of mind

Fear is caused when we don’t know what is happening, but the Lord has shown us what is to come. We know that climate change, wars, terrorism, tsunamis, natural and other disasters will happen because the Lord told us of these things many years ago. And he has also given us a way to deal with them so that we remain at peace. Without God there is stress. The world is perplexed at what is happening, cannot understand what is going on and does not know what to do.

Love

God is love. Through him we learn love and through love we come to him. In love we learn to do what is good, right and true. Do we get it right all the time? No, but we have faith that as we learn and grow in Christ we will achieve perfection in time. Away from God man lords it over his fellow man, but in Christ we are all equals seeking the same ends and there is harmony.

To those who believe, the power of God is apparent everywhere and we are awestruck by his work. The points above are just a few reasons why I chose God. Without God life in this world is pointless and futile, but with God there is a reason for being and the promise of a future.
