Unbreakable In God’s Power

(2 Corinthians 4:7-12)

Anyone who has faith will never doubt the power of God to protect and save. The examples in the bible are numerous where God has exercised His power to prevent calamity and death among His people. Paul recognized this power and shows us how the people of God are unbreakable in God's power.

These few verses are testimony to the depth of the power of God and how it works within us to protect and save. We are shown that even in the fragility of the human condition, and the weakness of our flesh, we become unbreakable.

This is testimony also to how we are being watched by God. It does not mean we will not go through troubles, trials and tribulations. Rather, He oversees all aspects of our lives so that we are not taken beyond our abilities to handle any crisis that may arise.

God Watches Over His People

In the scriptures we see just how deeply God keeps an eye on those people who have chosen to follow Jesus Christ. Let's look at just a few examples.

6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. 7 Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. – (Luke 12:6-7)

Look at the depth of detail and understanding Jesus tells us that God takes with His people. God knows us even down to the numbering of the hairs on our heads! No person has ever known another person to that level of detail, let alone all the people on the planet.

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. – (1 Corinthians 10:13)

All people on this earth are tempted and tested in many ways. But the advantage for the Christian is that God is watching over our lives, especially as we go through trials, testing and temptations.

This second verse tells us that we must go through the temptations, which God allows for our strengthening and growth. But He also limits the temptation to what we are able to handle. And that is worth remembering when we are going through low times. God will not allow us to be utterly thrown down to the point where we despair of life itself. If a temptation or testing comes, it has been allowed by God for our good and it is within the limits of what He knows we can handle even when we think we cannot.

And we see that with each temptation that comes along, God has provided the way of escape, not that we might avoid the situation, but that we may endure it. We have the need for endurance as we go through the temptation, but we should take comfort that in Christ Jesus we will come out the other side. We will be stronger and more capable for the experience.

We should remember as we go through trials that Jesus is the light at the end of the tunnel.

Another scripture we can be comforted by that shows us the protection of God for his people is this one.

1 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way. 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” – (Luke 13:1-5)

We see here a number of people in two different circumstances who died horrible deaths. The first lot were put to death in the pagan blood sacrifices that Pontius Pilate carried our, and the second group died when a tower fell on them.

Jesus asked the people with him to consider whether they thought these two groups were any worse than anyone else around at that time to have suffered in such a way. They were not. The bottom line is that they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But what we see that is most interesting in this story is what Jesus says after each example. He said, “…unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

There is life and protection promised in the act of repentance and coming to Jesus Christ. This is a promise of God that when we seek Him, we are offered a protection that is not afforded to the rest of the world who choose to reject God.

It does not mean we will not suffer or die eventually, as everyone dies. But it does mean that it will be limited and we will not die until the appointed day, hour, minute and second.

So we see from all of the above that God protects his people and oversees their lives for their good.

Unbreakable In God's Power

Which brings us back to the verses we are studying in 2 Corinthians 4 today.

Humans beings are fragile. We are easily injured and killed if we are not very careful. We are not made of steel or bulletproof, but as flesh and blood we can easily be hurt to the point of death. Damage to any of the major organs of the body will maim or kill us.

This is why Paul describes us as being “jars of clay” in this section of scripture. In other translations we are described as being “earthen vessels,” which to my mind is a better description when you remember that we were formed by God from the earth and these bodies of flesh and blood are really just vessel that hold our spirits while we live.

And like earthen vessels or jars of clay, this body is easily smashed when it falls. It is easily broken both through physical and spiritual falls (sinfulness), and there is nothing we can do about that. But look at what this scripture tells us.

7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. 8 We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies. 11 For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus' sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. – (2 Corinthians 4:7-12)

Paul shows us that the power of God has been poured into these earthly vessels so that when we do suffer or fall, we do not break like jars of clay. We are unbreakable in God's power, not through anything we do, but by the protecting power of God.

Thus, we go through afflictions to body, mind and spirit but from all of them we rise up again in the strength of the power of God. We suffer greatly as we stand up for Christ in our lives and refuse to give in to the wicked ways of this world. But in all of these afflictions, trials, testings, tribulations and persecutions, there is the underlying power of God through faith in Jesus Christ that protects and saves.

Walking In The Spirit

It is our faith that brings us through as we trust God to see us through all of these tough times. And it is by following the Lord according to His way and walking in the spirit as we go through the difficult times, that we remain strong in the face of great opposition.

Walking in the spirit is the means by which we can endure any test, trial or temptation. Walking in the spirit is how we stand strong in the face of opposition.

It is when we walk in the spirit that we exercise the power of God in us through the Holy Spirit, to overcome and endure the situation we find ourselves in.

As an example of the power of walking in the spirit, consider Paul and Silas who were wrongfully beaten and jailed. Did they complain or rant and rave at the injustices done to them? No! They sang hymns and praised the Lord in the darkness of their incarceration. This is the practical application of walking in the spirit where we trust God to resolve the issue and hand the problem to Him.

And there are many ways we can walk in the spirit to overcome our situation. We can study and read God's word. We can pray with our mind or in the Holy Spirit. We can meditate on a scripture. We can sing or listen to uplifting and inspirational songs. We can join with others to talk about our situations and pray for one another. And there are a host of other things we can do to walk in the spirit as we hand the problem to God for His resolution.

So let us not fall by the wayside, but rather be strong in the Lord, knowing all of these things mentioned above. Let us remember the power of God is with us and in us to carry us through all situations, protecting and strengthening. Take comfort in this knowledge knowing that in Christ Jesus we are…unbreakable in God's Power.
