(Luke 18:35-43)
Persistence is critical to your walk with Jesus. We are at war in the spiritual realm and the devil will throw all kinds of things in your way to block you from walking wholeheartedly with Jesus Christ. But you cannot allow those things to stand in your way and to drag you down. You must never, ever give up regardless of what comes as the reward for your persistence is the crown of life.
Persistence Pays Off
In this section of scripture we see a blind man by the roadside. On hearing a crowd passing by he enquires as to what is happening and is told Jesus is coming down the road. Hearing this he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! And those who were in front rebuked him, telling him to be silent; but he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” (Verse 38-39)
We see that despite people rebuking and telling him to be quiet, he continued to call out to the Lord. He had a need that he knew only the Lord could help him with and he was not going to be put off by a bunch of people who rejected and rebuked him. His focus was on getting the attention of the Lord so that he could bring his needs to him and receive what he wanted.
Receive the Reward of Persistence
Then we see Jesus stop and tell the people to bring this blind man to him. He said to the man, “What do you want me to do for you?” He said, “Lord, let me receive my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Receive your sight; your faith has made you well.” (verses 41-42)
The blind man’s persistence worked and the Lord heard his call. When he was brought before the Lord he made his request and it was granted and he received his sight.
Then we see a great change in the people about him. These same people who previously had rebuked the blind man now gave glory to the Lord for what had been done. So not only was the blind man blessed but his blessing multiplied to many others who saw it and gave God the glory. This is and was a marvellous thing.
The lesson for us
We need to learn the lesson of this blind man, which is persistence. We must not be swayed by those around us or by issues that are thrown at us by the devil. We need to continue in bringing our petitions before the Lord so that he may hear us and give us what we need.
What would the blind man have received had he listened to those around him and not continued to call out? The Lord would have passed him by and the opportunity to receive his sight would be lost forever. So with us. Persistence pays off and remember the words of Paul, “Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.” (Romans 12:11-12)
Be constant in prayer. Don’t ever give up on seeking the Lord for whatever you desire. He does hear us and he does answer prayers so never, ever give up and always show persistence in your requests to the Lord.
