Nation Will Rise Against Nation

(Luke 21:10-19)

This section of scripture covers prophecy from Jesus about the events leading up to the times of the end. Jesus gives us signs of what is to come and warnings for his followers so that they understand what is happening. He gives us this knowledge so that we will not be afraid and will have no cause to fear.

Nation will rise against nation

The first of these signs Jesus warns about is large scale war. He speaks of, “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.” (Verse 10) When we consider the past hundred years, never has there been a time of war like this in the recorded history of the world. We have had two world wars and countless other wars that have involved many nations and kingdoms. This is clear evidence of the beginning of the fulfilment of Jesus’ prophecy.

Earthquakes and Pestilence

Those who monitor earthquakes around the world have shown that the number, frequency and intensity of earthquakes has increased significantly in the past hundred years too. The damage caused has increased also, especially where tsunamis have been created as the result of the earthquake.

Consider the impact of the earthquakes in Christchurch New Zealand, the devastation of the Fukishima earthquake in Japan last year and the Boxing Day earthquake in the Indian ocean in 2004 where it is estimated that more the 230,000 people perished. The pestilence that follows such earthquake events often does as much or more damage than the quake itself.

There have been extreme weather events as well that have led to plagues and pestilence in many places. Mice plagues, locusts and other pestilence has been seen in many countries, much of this driven by the unusual weather patterns.

Terrors and Signs from Heaven

We can also point to the terrors from the heavens in the winds, cyclones and tornadoes that have whipped across the world wreaking devastation wherever they hit. The depletion of the ozone layer is also causing issues with freaky weather events. Whether you believe it is a man-made phenomena or not, the impact of global warming and ozone layer depletion is a fact that is occurring, whatever the source.

These are all signs in the heavens that have not been noted in past generations to the extent they are today. These are all escalating and causing great fear and questioning among the peoples of the world.

What the Lord says

But Jesus has forewarned that these things would happen. And what was his response? “But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your lives.” (Verses 18-19) He tells us not to worry about these things as they are all planned to occur. And he is telling us that those who follow Him will be protected from these events.

He also says that, “This will be a time for you to bear testimony.” (Verse 13) And that many of his people will be dragged before kings and governors, they will be imprisoned and they will be dragged before the religious authorities to give account. But he also says not to fear saying, “Settle it therefore in your minds, not to meditate beforehand how to answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.”

The Lord shows us that he will provide for us in these drastic times. Given the events we see in the news there is little doubt that we are in these times he calls the “birth pangs” of the time of the end. So rather than be fearful of what is happening, we can take comfort knowing that He will provide for us and that He is coming soon to remove all forms of evil from this world.
