More Weapons of Spiritual Warfare

(2 Thessalonians 3:1-5)

Do you have faith to grow as a Christian? Or have you stopped growing and are like someone who is asleep at the wheel? If so, wake up! You need to identify and use the weapons of spiritual warfare. And in this post we look at some more weapons of spiritual warfare.

The time is short and the return of the Lord is imminent. Now is not the time for complacency but instead to brush away the cobwebs and strengthen your faith.

But you may be wondering how? How will I get the faith that leads to growth in Christ? So today we will look at more weapons of spiritual warfare that will help you grow in Christ and stand firm in Him.

The weapons of spiritual warfare

There are many weapons of spiritual warfare that the Lord has given us.

Some have been given to the church as a whole to be able to fight spiritual attack. Others are given to us as individuals to be able to stand against the attacks of the devil.

The most obvious of the weapons of spiritual warfare are those listed in Ephesians 6, which I wrote about in these two posts: Seven weapons of spiritual warfare, and, Take the whole armour of God.

The subject of the weapons of spiritual warfare is so important, I also wrote a series of bible studies about it. You can find this series on my Bible Studies page under the title of “The Armour of God.” I have looked at each of the seven weapons of spiritual warfare in more detail. But there are even more weapons of spiritual warfare than just those seven that most people know about.

More weapons of spiritual warfare

In this scripture today that I am looking at, there are a few more weapons of spiritual warfare. This is what the verse has to say.

1 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed on and triumph, as it did among you, 2 and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men; for not all have faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from evil. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things which we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ. (2 Thessalonians 3:1-5)

The weapon of Prayer

The first of the extra weapons of spiritual warfare is – prayer. We see Paul asking for the church to pray that the word of the Lord would speed on and triumph…which it did!

Prayer is one of the key weapons that we have been given by the Lord. It can and should be used in ALL situations, whether we are being attacked or not.

Prayer is powerful and it can overcome many things. One of the key things about the effect of prayer is that when we pray, we are not relying on our own strength, but are seeking the power of God to step in and help us. This is what happens when we pray:

7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you men of double mind. (James 4:7-8)

When we pray we are drawing near to God and we are submitting ourselves to God. And as the scripture here tells us, when we do submit ourselves to God we are resisting the devil. When we resist the devil, then he will flee from us because he cannot remain in the presence of God

This is a powerful weapon of spiritual warfare that we can use in any and all circumstances.

Are you feeling upbeat and things are going well for you? Then pray and thank the Lord for His blessings. Are you feeling abused and downtrodden? Then pray and ask for the Lord’s help to overcome.

Pray at all times for this is a powerful weapon of warfare given to us by God to fight the good fight.

The weapon of Strength

The next additional weapon we see in this section of scripture is in verses 3 and 4. The weapon of strength to be able to stand in the face of anything that gets thrown at us.

How do we become strong in the Lord?

There are two primary things we need to do to grow strong in the Lord.

The first is to pray, which I have already covered above.

The second is by the study of the word. If we are to be strong in Christ, we need to be immersed in His teachings. His words are truth and they can answer any and all of the problems that arise or the attacks that come against us.

Recall when Jesus was attacked by the devil during His forty days of fasting in the wilderness.

1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” 5 Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will give his angels charge of you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” 7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; 9 and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Begone, Satan! for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” 11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him. (Matthew 4:1-11)

In every attack of the devil, Jesus responded and overcame by His knowledge of the scripture. In each case He responded by saying, “It is written…” and then shut down the attack of the devil.

And we see how powerful the word of God is because the devil did not disregard the responses of the Lord. The devil knew that the word of God would prevail and so he was shut down knowing that he could not defeat Jesus who knew the truth of the words of God. And as we see, the devil left Jesus because he was defeated by the word of God.

Jesus was strong in the word, and we need to also be strong in the word. It is by the truth of the word of God that we too can overcome all of the attacks of the devil. This is true strength and how we attain the weapon of strength in the Lord.

Do what the Lord commands

The last additional weapon we have in this section is to listen to Jesus and to do what He commands.

Sadly, there are many in the world who will not do what Jesus commanded. And even in the church there are some who will choose rather to listen to the doctrines of men instead of the doctrines of our Lord and Saviour.

There are many false doctrines in the church today with which the devil has fooled the church. Some of these false doctrines go all the way back to the third or fourth century AD and were enshrined in such things as the Nicene creed and subsequent decrees and teachings of the early church.

Since those days there have been many other false doctrines that have appeared in the church. And they have been permitted to infiltrate the church because men stopped listening to the commands of the Lord and listened instead to the doctrines of men.

In these last days it has escalated to an even worse level as we have seen such things as the prosperity gospel, divine faith movements, false prophecy, divine health, once saved always saved, and many other false teachings and false doctrines.

The scripture opposes these and many other doctrines of the Church. And if you want a glimpse of what the True Church of God should look like, based upon the scriptures, click the link and get a copy of my free eBook: The True Church of God. You may be amazed at the things that are accepted as truth in the church today that are either false or based upon lies.

These things I have discussed are just a couple of the extra weapons of spiritual warfare that we have and can use. There are others as well and if you would like to know more, send me an email with any questions, or put a note/request in the comments.
