(1 Timothy 4:7 – Godless and Silly Myths)
If we are to find a place with Christ and enter into life, we must seek and find the truth.
This scripture today warns us to, “Have nothing to do with godless and silly myths.” There are plenty of godless and silly myths in the world today, although we probably call them conspiracy theories and controversies.
Regardless of what they are called, they are still godless and silly as they add nothing to the truth of the gospel or lead people to salvation.
Godless and Silly Myths – Past
In the days of the Lord and the disciples, there were countless myths.
All of the different forms of pagan religion were based upon myths. Everything seemed to have it’s own gods whether it was to do with the weather, earth, or the many stellar bodies in the heavens, each of them had their own set of myths that people believed.
But faith in those things was completely godless. There was no value in holding a form of religion based on mythical gods and creatures that had no real being.
All of the different parts of the world had their own myths too. There were the Norse gods of Scandinavia like Thor, Odin, and so on. There were the Greek myths about Zeus, Hermes, Aphrodite and so on. And there were myths of the Romans, Babylonians, Gauls, Celts, and Druids.
All of them were godless and silly myths because they had no basis or reality. They had nothing to do with the one true God or His Son, Jesus Christ, and so they were futile.
Godless and Silly Myths – Today
One of the fascinating things we see today is how modern popular culture is reviving many of those ancient godless and silly myths.
They are being brought back in the guise of films like Thor, Loki and so on.
But does it matter? Isn’t it all just entertainment?
No. Because the revival of these godless and silly myths does not glorify the one true God, but glorifies the foolishness of the devil.
And in truth, many of those historical godless and silly myths still exist today and are unknowingly worshipped by Christians.
All of the paraphernalia and trappings of both Christmas and Easter are based upon the godless and silly myths of old. Both of them have their roots in the myths of Babylon that have been translated into European and other countries. They were brought into the church in its early days as a mechanism to bring the pagan nations into the church. And they have polluted the church ever since.
Does it matter?
Yes it matters a lot. Following these godless and silly myths, whether they are the so-called religious holidays, or the conspiracy theories and controversies, take people away from the Lord.
Jesus made a very telling statement that we need to consider as it pertains to these things. He said:
He who is not with me is against me, and he who does not gather with me scatters. (Matthew 12:30)
There is no sitting on the fence with the Lord. Either you are with Him, or you are against Him. You cannot have a foot in both camps. You cannot be lukewarm in Christ.
Remember also the words of the first of the Ten Commandments which speak to this issue as well.
You shall have no other gods before me. (Deuteronomy 5:7)
God was quite adamant in the first of the Ten Commandments that He would not tolerate any other gods before Him. He is described in the second commandment as being a “jealous god” and He will not share His rightful place of worship with any other so-called gods.
And this feed into the words of Jesus mentioned above in Matthew 12:30. If you are not with God and a worshipper of the one true God, then you are standing in opposition to Him.
So, with this in mind, if Christians follow the pageantry and the forms of Christmas and Easter that are based upon pagan religions, then are they worshipping God?
No, they are not. They are worshipping the gods of godless and silly myths. And if they are not worshipping God, then who are they worshipping? Satan, that’s who.
How should we remember the birth and death of Jesus?
If we reject Christmas and Easter because they are of pagan origin, how should Christians remember our Lord’s birth and death?
In the manner instructed in the Bible.
In truth, there is nowhere in the scripture that tells us to remember the birth of Jesus. We don’t know when He was born anyway (December 25th is based on a pagan holiday celebration, not the birth of Christ). We do not need to remember or celebrate His birth.
However, we are meant to remember His death, because it was in the giving of His life for us that we received the salvation and promise of life.
Jesus, Himself explained how we are to remember His death and resurrection. We are to do this through the breaking of bread as a Church when the church comes together. We take the bread and the juice in remembrance of His death and resurrection, as He instructed the disciples to do at the Last Supper. This is how we remember His death and resurrection.
But all of the godless and silly myths need to be utterly rejected as they are false. Not only are they a distraction from the truth, they are forms of pagan worship that God would find disgusting. Do not get involved in any godless and silly myths.
