(2 Timothy 2:16-18 – Conspiracies, Contradictions, and False Doctrine)
There is a poison in the modern church. It began shortly after the church first came into existence two thousand years ago and has only gotten worse in the intervening centuries.
This poison revolves around the acceptance of conspiracies, contradictions, and false doctrine in the church. When the people of God fall prey to these things and accept them as gospel truth, it leads to ungodliness and the destruction of the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Today, we have the massive challenge of trying to sift the things we are taught in church to try and find the truth. The truth is still there to be found and God will open the eyes of those who seek, but it is a hard road.
The issues with Conspiracies, Contradictions, and False Doctrine
Ever since the earliest days of the church there have been godless people bringing heresy into the church. If that were not the case, Paul and the other disciples would not have been so upset and focused on such issues. This is what these verses say today.
16 Avoid such godless chatter, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, 17 and their talk will eat its way like gangrene. Among them are Hymenae’us and Phile’tus, 18 who have swerved from the truth by holding that the resurrection is past already. They are upsetting the faith of some. (2 Timothy 2:16-18)
As the scripture says, all of these conspiracies, contradictions, and false doctrine are godless chatter. There is no godliness in any of these things. They are designed to take people away from the truth of the gospel and lead them into false religion.
All of these things have no basis in scripture or godless men have twisted scripture to create doctrines that are not validated in the truth of the Bible.
What is the source of these Conspiracies, Contradictions, and False Doctrine?
Quite simply, all of these conspiracies, contradictions, and false doctrine have just one source.
Satan. It is the devil himself who is the source of these lies. And we know that this attack on the church comes from him for we are told as much in Revelation.
12 Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!” 13 And when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had borne the male child. 14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. 15 The serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, to sweep her away with the flood. 16 But the earth came to the help of the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed the river which the dragon had poured from his mouth. (Revelation 12:12-16)
The woman in this scripture is the church. The serpent and the dragon are both the devil.
We see that the serpent/dragon is trying to drown the woman by pouring a river out of his mouth to sweep her away in the flood.
This is the critical point to note. What comes out of the mouth?
Words. Teachings. Ideas.
But being the devil, these will be false words, false doctrines, false teachings, and all forms of evil. Many of these will be half-truths, which of course are lies because there is no such thing as a “half truth.” And it is these lies that have found their way into the church in the form of false doctrines.
What are these Conspiracies, Contradictions, and False Doctrine?
One of the challenges today is that many of these lies have become so entrenched in the church that to suggest they are false doctrines is akin to heresy. However, the truth needs to be revealed so that those who seek the truth can find the way forward by rejecting what is false.
Some of the false doctrines that have no basis in scripture include: trinity, purgatory, the use of worry beads, prayer shawls, infant baptism, worship of the cross, and many others.
Likewise, some doctrines that have been built on twisted scriptures include: once saved always saved, tithing, divine health, raised altars, and there are many more.
Depending on your background, I would imagine that you might think I am speaking heresy just considering some of these things might be false doctrines. You may think I am some heretical preacher with no idea of the truth of the doctrines of Jesus Christ.
But it is because Jesus Himself has seen fit to open these things to myself and others that I can assuredly say these teachings are not based upon the truth.
Time and space do not permit me to go through all of these or even to list all of the doctrines of which even I am aware. And by no means do I know all of the things that have entered and polluted the modern church.
If, however, you want the substantial biblical proof that these doctrines are false, I would recommend to you two of my free eBooks. The first is The True Church of God and this eBook covers many of these false doctrines as well as what the TRUE church of God should look like. The second eBook is devoted to the issue of tithing in the modern church as it is a gross lie perpetrated upon the people of God keeping them under a bondage that Jesus Christ Himself has set them free from. I have detailed all of this in my free eBook titled Should Christians Tithe.
I repeat, the above eBooks are free and will open your eyes to some truths that have been lost by the work of the devil who has promoted a raft of conspiracies, contradictions, and false doctrine in the church since it’s inception.
Consider the example that Paul wrote about in the scripture quoted above in 2 Timothy 2:18. Even in the days when there were still many people alive, including most of the Apostles of Jesus Christ, there were some who believed and taught that the resurrection had already occurred. If such a lie and a false doctrine could be promoted in those days, how much worse has it gotten today, two thousand years later! I have even heard that there are some who believe there is no resurrection and some who preached there was no Creation!
What should YOU do about these Conspiracies, Contradictions, and False Doctrine?
The answer to that question is easy to say, but hard to do.
Find the truth for yourself! Seek it passionately and with every fibre of your being. Do not blindly accept whatever anyone (myself included) tells you, but seek the truth for yourself.
Immerse yourself in the scripture for the Bible is the TRUE word of God and it holds the truth. Pray about the things you hear and read and ask the Lord to show you the truth and to be able to reject what is erroneous.
And finally accept the Lord’s promise when He said:
7 “Ask, and it will be given you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. (Matthew 7:7-8)
The Lord doesn’t want His people to be in the dark. He wants His people to know the fullness of the truth. But you need to go to God and ask, seek and knock so that He knows you are serious about wanting to know the truth. And when you ARE serious, God will open His word to you in ways you never thought possible.
So, seek all of the things of the truth in the name and the power of the Lord Jesus Christ, and reject all of the conspiracies, contradictions and false doctrine that are blemishes in the church today.
