(Luke 2:22-40)
Much of this section of scripture is historical and refers to Jesus when his parents brought him to the temple as a babe. It was required under the laws of Moses that all male children be presented to the Lord in the temple and offerings made.
At that time though, Simeon, a devout and righteous man was at the temple. He came by direction from the Holy Spirit for he had been told earlier that he should not die before he had seen the Saviour who was to come. He recognised Jesus as the Saviour and blessed him and his parents.
He spoke of the role Jesus was to play in bring the light of knowledge that would be spread amongst the Israelites and the offer of salvation through Jesus that would come to the Gentiles. He spoke also of the suffering Jesus would be subjected to as well.
It was interesting that he spoke thus, especially in relation to the offer that would come to the Gentiles. The Jews had nothing to do with the Gentiles, but it is clear this man knew the scriptures in the Old Testament that prophesied of Jesus and how he would bring this light to the Gentiles.
In addition Simeon spoke of Jesus as being set for the fall and rising of many within Israel and for a sign that is spoken against. Never has there been in all of history such a polarisation as there is in the name of Jesus. The name of Christ is a dividing force between those who choose to follow and those who do not. His name sets apart those who follow the Lord from those who do not and amongst those who do not he is greatly opposed and spoken against. Jesus himself said, “Do not think that I have come to bring peace on earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (Matthew 10:34)
Finally we see in this section after all had been completed, they returned to Nazareth in Galilee where Jesus grew up strong, full of wisdom and the favour of God.
