Curse Of The Law

(Galatians 3:10)

If ever there was a verse in the Bible that should lead us to seek the freedom from law that is offered through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is this verse. It reads as follows.

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, “Cursed be every one who does not abide by all things written in the book of the law, and do them.” (Galatians 3:10)

The law was introduced to the children of Israel as a good thing, and it IS a good thing. But it came with this curse that anyone who did not abide by ALL things written in the law would suffer the consequences for not following the law in it’s entirety. That is why the promise of salvation and freedom in Jesus Christ is such a great blessing, because in Him we are redeemed from the curse.

Curse of the Law

We see that the curse of the law comes through not abiding by the law. It is quite easy to understand why, since those who do not abide by the law of God are breaking the law and thus are sinners.

But the challenge for all mankind is that no man is capable of keeping the fullness of the laws of Moses. No man has the ability because we are all born with the sin factor, weakened by the passions, lusts and desires of our flesh, and we fall short of the glory of God. The law is indeed presented with a curse for this reason.

But in Christ Jesus we have been set free from the law. In Christ Jesus we are able to escape the law and at the same time, escape the curse of the law pronounced by Moses that was quoted in this verse.

Jesus died to set us free from sin AND to remove the law from us. When we take on His death as our own, which we do when we go through water baptism, we die with Him. And we see in Romans chapter 7 that if we are dead, we are no longer under the law.

Do you not know, brethren–for I am speaking to those who know the law–that the law is binding on a person only during his life? (Romans 7:1)

The law is binding on a person only while they are alive. So if a person died, they are no longer subject to the law, and no longer bound under the curse of the law. So if we want to be free from the law, all we have to do is die! Simple! But how?

When Jesus died the process of baptism into His death was established and enabled so that we could take His death as our own. We die “by proxy” when we are baptised into the death of Jesus so that the debt of sin is paid and we can be set free from the law.

2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. (Romans 6:2-4)

We were buried in death with Christ through baptism, and as a result we died with Him. This is a faith based teaching, for once we believe that we have died with Him, we can readily accept we are dead to the law and dead to sin.

The Church and The Law

Now the next major issue the church at large faces today, is that even though this message is preached showing we are freed from sin, most Christians do not believe it. Most Christians today believe they are still bound under the law because they are taught that they are under law. They are told that they are under the Ten Commandments as a minimum, and they are often told they must tithe, which was another of the laws, and many other things.

The truth of the matter is that Christians today are set free from the law and set free from sin, at least, those who have been baptised into the death of Christ Jesus. But only if they have faith to believe it.

Why does the church keep people under the bondage of the law today? For some it is power, for others it is personal gain, for others still it is because they don’t know any different because their pastors, preachers, teachers and ministers have been taught this in their bible schools, not realising this is wrong.

If you truly want to walk and grow in Jesus Christ, it is essential you understand how the New Covenant works and what is and is not part of the New Covenant. Bondage under law is definitely not part of the New Covenant because the New Covenant is focused on salvation and freedom from sin and the bondage to the law.

So open your eyes and seek the truth f this matter. You have been redeemed from the curse of the law by Jesus Christ. He gave His life and His blood to set you free from sin, the law and the curse of the law. Do not negate His sacrifice by believing you are still bound when you have been set free. Ask, seek and knock on the Lord’s door through prayer and study, and God has promised you will find the truth. And remember also, “The truth will make you free” as we are told in John 8:32.

You have been set free from the curse of the law by the death of Jesus Christ. Do not fall prey to it again.
