God Shows No Partiality

(Romans 2:6-11)

People talk about the two great inevitabilities being death and taxes. However neither of those is inevitable as we can be set free from death in Jesus Christ and if you know how you can legally avoid taxes.

God shows no partiality. You will be judged by what you do.
God shows no partiality. You will be judged by what you do.

But there is one thing that truly is an inevitability, and that is the God shows no partiality. He does not care whether a person is rich or poor, nor does He care about the types of things that divide people like race, creed, religion and colour of the skin. None of these are important in His sight.

What The Lord God is concerned about is whether a person does what is right or wrong, and depending on what a person does will determine how they are treated and what they receive from God.

According to Your Works

The Lord will judge all people and there is a day of judgement coming upon the whole earth. The basis of this judgement will be, “What have you done.” Note what this section of scripture says.

6 He will render to each one according to his works: 7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. 9 There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, 10 but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. 11 For God shows no partiality.

The key to receiving good things from God, and in the end a positive judgement and entrance into His kingdom, is to do what is good. We are called to do what is good and right and true. We are to behave in a manner that is pleasing to God.

But what does that mean and what does it entail? The scriptures above likewise give us the key.

Selfishness and Self-seeking

One of the main issues that we are told to avoid is “self-seeking.” That is, we are to avoid looking after ourself, especially at the expense of others.

Self seeking is selfishness and it is the opposite of what the truth of Christianity is all about.

When Jesus came to the earth He came to teach us, but also to show us the example of how we are to live if we desire to enter the kingdom of God.

His example was one of service and compassion, of mercy and forgiveness, of hope and of love. His example was one where relationships are built and nurtured and where the important part of those relationships was focused on the other persons needs and comfort.

Arrogance and pride with hypocrisy were the things He despised most and the primary reasons for despising these things is that they are all self-seeking and selfish.

The person who is arrogant and proud cares only for their own well being and not that of others. A hypocrite is even worse because they have the appearance of caring and they may say the right words but they DO nothing about it. They speak and do not act in accordance with their words.

And that is why The Lord says in verse 6 of this section that, “He will render to each one according to his works.”

By “works” He is speaking of what you do, that is, your actions and behaviours. He is not talking necessarily about doing great and mighty works, building churches, schools, ministries and missions. No, he is concerned about the relationships and the way each of us treat and behave with one another.

The best example of these works or behaviours that The Lord is seeking can be seen in Matthew 25:31-46, which I highly recommend you read. In this section of scripture we see that those who were accepted by The Lord and judged worthy, were those who saw the needs of their brethren and filled those needs by helping or providing what was needed. It was by their actions and behaviours towards their fellow man that The Lord judged and recognised as making them worthy of the kingdom. But those who saw the needs and did not provide for their fellow man were rejected because they did not act when they had the opportunity and the means to provide for those in need.

One other point I should make here concerns faith. We are saved by faith and we can only receive the salvation from The Lord on the basis of faith in Jesus Christ. But we are judged worthy by the actions and behaviours that show the truth of our faith. How we behave towards others is the proof that we believe and have faith in Jesus Christ and that we desire to please Him.

No Partiality

Finally we must also understand that with God there is no partiality. He does not show favouritism to any person but will accept or reject all people on the same basis and by the exact same set of rules.

When He judges it is fair and reasonable. His judgement is based on truth and not biased or prejudiced in any way.

God does not care one way or the other about the things that man judges by. He is not influenced by a mans power, position, status, wealth, knowledge or anything else. He is not even influenced by whether a man has studied the word of God all his life and has done mighty works in the name of God.

In the end He will judge all of mankind by the same set of rules and there is no partiality or bias in His judgement. His justice will prevail and His purpose will be served.

For us it is our responsibility to seek the truth, find the faith and to act and behave in the manner that will please God. If we do that then we will be judged worthy and will receive his reward for those who work at doing what is good and right and true. We will be acceptable to God and gain entry into His kingdom.
