Ask and It Will Be Given You

(Luke 11:9-13)

Do you know how to get what you want? Do you know how to find what you are seeking? Strangely, many people seem not to know these simple things, and that is a problem, especially in relation to their walk with Christ.

Ask and it Will be Given

If you want something, you need to ask for it. That is a fundamental thing we teach our children when they are young. We are not mind readers and so if we want to receive anything, the first thing we need to do is to ask for it.

God wants to give us good things, but he also wants us to ask for the things that we need. One of the best things that God gives to man is the Holy Spirit. In this section of scripture he tells us that if we ask him for the Holy Spirit he will give it to us. Verse 13 says, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

There is a great promise in this, but it rests upon us asking God for what we need or want, and then he will give it to us.

Seek and You Will Find

In the same way, how many times have you lost or misplaced something? Is it possible to find it without looking for it? Of course not!

It is the same with the truth of the New Covenant and all the Lord offers to us today. If you want the good things of God, you need to seek them out. And again he has added a promise saying, “See, and you WILL find.” (Verse 9 – my emphasis).

When we seek the things of the Lord and ask for his help. He opens the way for us to find them.

Knock and it Will be Given

Finally if we come to a door and are looking to enter, just standing outside will achieve nothing. If you want to get inside you must first knock and show your intention that you are seeking entry. How will the people inside know that you want to come in if you don’t first knock?

Likewise, if you are seeking entry to the door of the Kingdom of God, you need to knock on the door. Jesus is the door as he says elsewhere and we need to enter through him. So come to Jesus and knock.

The best thing about these three aspects of ask, seek and knock is that with each of them there is the promise of receiving what we have come for. When we come to the Lord to ask, seek or knock Jesus says he WILL answer and we WILL receive what we are looking for.

So go to the Lord in confidence knowing that he will give you what you need. If you want to receive the Holy Spirit, ask the Lord for the Holy Spirit and he will give it. This is important for the Holy Spirit is our guide, teacher, counsellor and comforter and will do the work of transforming our life into the image of Christ.

This is a good gift and one we should ask for. Go to him in confidence and ask, seek and knock and you will receive the answers you seek.
